With the rapid development for the recent dozens of years, computer science and technology is the fastest growing high-tech area and one of the important pillars of modern information science and technology.

Computer science of South China Agricultural University (SCAU) was established in 1981. It began to enroll computer specialty college students in 1993 and Computer Science and Technology Major (CSTM)   specialized undergraduate in 1998.

CSTM enrolls science students scored above the local minimum mark for applying to key universities within the National Enrollment Plan and grants Bachelor of Engineering Degree to qualified undergraduates.

The personnel training objects of CSTM are to cultivate composite talents of high quality with moral, intellectual, physical all-round development, solid computer science and technology basic theory, knowledge, skills and methods, scientific literacy, humane quality, comprehensive practical and innovative ability, able to teach, and to do scientific research, computer software and hardware development and application in scientific research departments, education departments, institutions, technical sectors and administrative departments.

CSTM of SCAU is Guangdong Famous Specialty, Comprehensive Reform Pilot Specialty of Guangdong Colleges and Universities, and SCAU Feature Specialty, owning Guangdong Off-campus Practice Education Base for College students and Guangdong Application-oriented Personnel Training Demonstration Base.

CSTM attaches great importance to personnel training. Students have achieved great success in creative activities and academic competitions, of particular note, in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). According to the "South China Agricultural University Social Demand and Training Quality Annual Report" released by MyCOS Corporation, CSTM keeps ranking top 3 on the SCAU Employment Competitiveness Index List.
